Rapper Sentenced to Prison
Rapper Petey Pablo was sentenced earlier this week to 35 months in prison after being convicted of trying to take a loaded gun through a North Carolina airport last year. Pablo, whose real name is Moses Barrett III, reportedly attempted to take the gun, which was reported stolen during a home burglary in Gardena, California back in 2005, through airport security when it was spotted by x-ray machines in one of the rapper's carry-on bags. Pablo was arrested on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a stolen firearm on November 11, 2010. Pablo, who was reportedly on his way to Los Angeles for MTV's Video Music Awards, had previously spent five years in a North Carolina State Prison for his role in a 1993 armed robbery and, as a convicted felon, Pablo was not supposed to own or possess a firearm.

Los Angeles criminal defense attorney can tell you that the vast majority of weapons charges are classified as felony criminal offenses, subjecting you to jail or prison time and expensive fines or court fees upon conviction. Depending on the exact circumstances of your case, you could spend anywhere from four to 12 years in a county jail or a state prison. A Los Angeles criminal defense attorney can also tell you that having a felony conviction on your record can actually limit your life choices: employers and housing companies routinely check for felony criminal offenses while California law stipulates that many convicted felons are not allowed to possess firearms or deadly weapons. An experienced Los Angeles criminal defense attorney also knows that small details, such as whether or not the weapon was loaded, can make a big difference in determining whether your particular charges are misdemeanors or felonies, and can land you in jail for even longer periods of time. There are many defenses, however, against weapons charges. A good Los Angeles criminal defense attorney will investigate your case thoroughly to determine if local law enforcement agents in your case improperly collected evidence against you, or improperly searched you or your belongings to begin with.
