Lowe Arrested for DUI
Derek Lowe, star pitcher for the Atlanta Braves professional baseball team, was arrested in late April for driving under the influence of alcohol. Lowe, known for his stellar pitching in the 2004 Major League Baseball playoffs when he pitched for the Boston Red Sox, was spotted by a Georgia State Trooper speeding and possibly racing another car down an Atlanta street. Upon approaching Lowe's vehicle, the law enforcement officer reportedly smelled alcohol and asked Lowe to take a field sobriety test, which Lowe reportedly failed. Lowe was later asked to take a breath analysis test to determine his blood alcohol concentration, which he refused. Lowe was arrested and spent several hours in a local jail before posting $2,944 bail and being released. Lowe was officially charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI), reckless driving and improper lane change. No word has been given on when Lowe will appear in court, or what type of punishment he may be facing.
While Lowe's DUI incident occurred in Atlanta, Los Angeles law enforcement agents are no less strict about enforcing local DUI-related laws. As any experienced Los Angeles DUI defense attorney can tell you, drinking and driving carries heavy and long-lasting consequences. Under normal circumstances, a
Los Angeles DUI defense attorney can tell you that a typical first-time DUI offender will often be punished with probation. Certain conditions, however, can increase the severity of punishments upon conviction, as well as lengthen their terms. For example, a
Los Angeles DUI defense attorney knows that speeding while driving under the influence (like Lowe), especially more than 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit can land you in jail, or leave you without your driving privileges for an extended period of time. Other factors such as having a blood alcohol content of 0.20% or more at the time of your arrest, having a child of 14 years of age or younger in the car at the time of your arrest, or prior DUI convictions can all land you in either a Los Angeles County Jail or even a California State Prison.
