Major League Baseball DUI Woes
A recent article on Sports Illustrated's website, www.si.com, by writer Ann Killion shed some light on troubling pattern of drinking and driving in Major League Baseball (MLB). According to Killion, there have been as many as six driving under the influence of alcohol arrests or incidents by professional baseball players this year. Given that the professional baseball season only just got underway in April and doesn't officially end until November that is quite a bit of DUI activity so far. According to Killion, the most recent DUI incident occurred just a couple of weeks ago when Shin-Soo Choo for the Cleveland Indians was arrested for DUI in Ohio. Choo was reportedly spotted by local law enforcement agents in Ohio around 2:30 in the morning on May 2nd, weaving down an Ohio road. Choo was asked to perform a field sobriety test, which he reportedly did not do well on. Choo was then given a breath analysis test where his blood alcohol content tested at 0.20%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%. Most troubling to Killion is the lack of response from team organizations to discipline players who drink and drive; Choo was back in the starting line-up for the Indians the following night. No word has been given on when Choo will be required to appear in court.
