DUI Crash Kills Teen
Funeral services were held on Monday for a 14-year-old from Irvine who died following an alcohol-related accident on May 29th. According to reports, Ashton Sweet was in a car with her father, Mohammed "Mike" Ghaemi and three of her female friends when another car ran a red left turn signal and slammed into their Mercedes. Ashton was declared brain dead the following day at a local hospital and was kept on life support until her organs could be donated. Another girl in the car was critically injured with broken bones and a lacerated spleen, but was later released from a local hospital. Sweet's father and the two other girls in the car were treated for less serious injuries. Austin Jeffrey Farley was the driver of the car that hit Sweet's. Farley, 26, has a history of alcohol-related arrests as well as mental problems. Farley was convicted of misdemeanor DUI in June of 2009. According to police reports, Farley's blood alcohol concentration was 0.20% and police at the scene report he had trouble keeping his balance. Farley is currently being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court on June 24th. Farley has pleaded not guilty to murder, driving under the influence of alcohol and other charges. If convicted, Farley is facing 20 years to life in prison.
