Skyjack DUI
Conventional wisdom would say that being charged with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) only applies to driving a transportation vehicle such as a car or truck. Conventional wisdom, however, has been increasingly proven wrong. A popular video that is currently circulating the internet and providing plenty of laughs to people all over the world features an allegedly inebriated man driving around on a skyjack. A skyjack, if you don't know (I didn't), is a type of lift often used on construction sites. It has expandable connected legs and can be driven from place to place around a construction site on tires and even has a small steering wheel. In the video footage, the man driving the skyjack is pulled over by local law enforcement after they see him drinking a beer before pulling out onto the street from a driveway. The skyjack driver, who was identified only as "Steve" in the video, repeatedly refuses to step down from his perch after the police officer on the scene asks him to. Steve claims to have been on his way to pick up lunch for several of his coworkers and that the beer visible at his feet "is for later." Police eventually succeed in handcuffing the driver and pulling him off the skyjack. Besides the fact that the footage was collected from the squad car camera of a local policeman, not much else is known about Steve, or what happened to him after his arrest.
As any Los Angeles DUI defense attorney can attest, people can, and often do, get charged with DUI even if they are not driving an actual car. There have been many reported cases of people being arrested and charged with DUI after local law enforcement agents have stopped them on bicycles, scooters, seated lawnmowers, and even motorized chairs. To most onlookers, this might seem like a funny situation, but experienced
Los Angeles DUI defense attorneys know that being charged with DUI is a serious matter. Even if you did get caught on something such as a bicycle, having a DUI can affect your license to drive a motor vehicle, and can find you punished with probation, jail time, fines and mandatory community service or alcohol education classes.
