Rapper Arrested for DUI
Popular rap artist Tone Loc was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol last month. The rapper, whose real name is Anthony Terrell Smith, was spotted by local police officers driving erratically through the streets of Los Angeles around three o'clock in the morning on December 13th. He was arrested and booked into a local jail and released 12 hours later after posting $5,000 bail. Smith released word through his manager that he gave up drinking several years ago and could not possibly have been driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Instead, the rapper claims to have suffered from a seizure while driving that night that led to his erratic driving, possibly from bad food he had consumed earlier that day. After being released from police custody, Smith checked into a local hospital later in the day to get his health concerns checked out. Smith previously claimed to have had a seizure after passing out onstage during a club performance in Florida in 2009, and similar health concerns were reported when the rapper also collapsed onstage during a 2008 performance in North Carolina. The next day, the rapper claimed his DUI charge was "a mistake" made by the Los Angeles Police Department.
As any Los Angeles DUI defense attorney can attest, DUI cases are never quite as cut-and-dry as they might first appear. One of the biggest defenses against DUI charges is often that the symptoms of certain health conditions can mimic the typical symptoms of inebriation. Field sobriety tests, which are physical tests administered by police when they suspect someone is driving under the influence of alcohol, are notoriously bad markers of a person's actual sobriety. Many tests, such as walking a straight line or reciting the alphabet backward, can be difficult for someone who is dealing with common ailments such as an ear infection or the flu. An experienced

also knows that even breath analysis tests, which have become a popular feature in many DUI arrests, can give false results with certain medications or health conditions such as diabetes. Even people on a low carbohydrate diet can produce certain chemicals in their mouths that are so similar in chemical structure to alcohol that breath analysis machines will classify them as alcohols and potentially lead to a DUI arrest.
