Gallo Sentenced in Adenhart DUI Case
Andrew Gallo, a 24-year-old construction worker, was sentenced in late December to 51 years to life in prison for causing a horrific crash that claimed the life of professional baseball player Nick Adenhart in 2009. Gallo was driving under the influence of alcohol when he drove through a red light and collided with Adenhart's vehicle at approximately 65 miles per hour. Adenhart, who had just hours earlier pitched a great game for the Angels in Anaheim, had three other passengers in his vehicle, two of which also died. The fourth person in Adenhart's vehicle suffered severe injuries but survived. Gallo was convicted last November on three counts of second-degree murder and one count each of hit-and-run driving and driving under the influence of alcohol and causing great bodily harm. Gallo is said to have been consuming both bear and shots of hard liquors at three different bars on the evening of the accident before he finally got into his family's minivan with this stepbrother. Gallo, who was on parole for an earlier driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) conviction, fled the scene of the accident and was quickly caught by local law enforcement agents.
The reason Los Angeles law makers and law enforcement officials take DUI charges so seriously is precisely because the consequences can be severe and long-lasting. Without even meaning to, Gallo ended the lives of three people and severely injured a fourth person with one simple decision to drive home under the influence of alcohol. Gallo's case is all the more egregious since he had already been convicted of at least one prior DUI offense and should have known that what he was doing was both illegal and dangerous. As any experienced Los Angeles DUI defense attorney can tell you, public sympathy for a person such as Gallo runs very low when lives are lost.
