NY Jets' Edwards Arrested for DWI
Professional football player Braylon Edwards was arrested in New York for driving while intoxicated (DWI) earlier this week while driving his Land Rover through Manhattan's West Side. Law enforcement officials at the scene initially pulled Edwards over for illegally tinted windows. Once officers approached the vehicle, however, they smelled alcohol coming from inside. Edwards, who is a wide receiver for the New York Jets, was given a breath test at the scene as well as another at a nearby police station and reportedly had a blood alcohol content of .016%, twice the legal limit of .08%. The general manager for the Jets, Mike Tannenbaum, issued a statement following the arrest expressing disappointment in Edwards' decision to drive while intoxicated, particularly since the Jets organization provides a free luxury ride service to all its athletes in order to avoid having them drive while under the influence of alcohol. Further complicating Edwards' case is the potential probation violation stemming from a misdemeanor assault incident that took place in Cleveland, Ohio in 2009. If Edwards is found to have violated his probation, he could face jail time in Ohio. If Edwards is found guilty of his latest charge, he may face heavy fines and suspension from the National Football League, in addition to whatever punishments he receives from the courts.
