Leyritz Trial Stalled
The trial of former professional baseball player Jim Leyritz hit a snag last week as attorneys involved in the case argued about a few key pieces of evidence. Leyritz, who played for 11 different teams including the New York Yankees during his baseball career, is being charged with manslaughter in connection with driving under the influence of alcohol stemming from a tragic car accident in December of 2007. Leyritz is accused of running a red light while driving drunk and slamming into the car of a 30 year-old woman, Frieda Ann Vietch, who died in the crash. Leyritz has pleaded not guilty to the charges and his attorneys were attempting to use evidence in the trial that Veitch's blood alcohol content was also above the .08% legal limit, that she was sending text messages on her cell phone at the time of the crash and was also not wearing her seat belt. Judge Marc Gould ruled last week that none of that evidence would be admissible during Leyritz's trial since several witnesses testified that Veitch, not Leyritz, had a green light at the time of the crash. If convicted, Leyritz could face up to 15 years in prison.
