Bus Driver Convicted of DUI
A San Diego County bus driver was convicted last month of driving under the influence of alcohol while on the job. David Costello, an employee of the county's public transportation system First Transit, was driving along his route back in June of this year when a rider called 911 to report him driving slowly, stopping at empty stops and even staggering off the bus to urinate at one point. When local law enforcement officials stopped him between Oceanside and Encinitas, Costello's blood alcohol content was tested and was reportedly .25% -- more than triple the legal limit of .08% for most drivers, as well as more than six times the .04% legal limit for commercial drivers on the job. Costello reportedly has had a long and difficult history of alcohol abuse problems and has been cited nine times for alcohol-related incidents in the last four years. Costello was sentenced to 90 days in a San Diego County jail, as well as 120 days in an alcohol treatment program.
Los Angeles County shares some very strict laws with San Diego County regarding commercial drivers driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Just as in San Diego, the legal blood alcohol content for a person holding a commercial driver's license is just .04%. When you drive for a living, whether as a public transportation driver, a trucker or even a taxi driver, you have a greater responsibility to be safe while driving. Being on the road all day, every day can put you at a greater risk for car accidents, even if you take great pains to be sober and alert. With the reduced response time and alertness that driving under the influence of alcohol are known to cause, your chances of causing or getting into a car accident go up exponentially if you drink and drive.
