UFC Fighter Arrested for DUI
Ultimate Fighting Championship standout fighter Christ Leben was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) earlier this week. Leben is reported to have been driving down a highway in Hawaii when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a nearby wall. Local law enforcement agents arriving at the scene determined that Leben was driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested him. Leben, who currently resides in East Oahu, Hawaii, was also found to have been driving without a driver's license or auto insurance. The UFC star has been arrested for DUI before: in 2008 he was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Oregon and ultimately served 35 days in a Clackamas County jail when he was found to have been in violation of probation from an earlier incident. Leben is due to be arraigned in a Hawaii court sometime in November.
While Leben's DUI arrest occurred in Hawaii, it offers some very important lessons for drivers in Los Angeles as well. Driving without a license and prior DUI convictions and arrests can make your most current DUI proceedings more difficult and make harsher punishments more likely in the event of a conviction. While driving without a license is a misdemeanor crime that would ordinarily garner some jail time, probation or fines, being found to have been driving without a license while also driving under the influence of alcohol can lead to longer jail sentences or probation and an increase in potential fines. If you are charged with multiple DUI offenses, punishments such as jail time, probation, mandatory alcohol counseling or rehabilitation, the suspension of your driving privileges for longer periods of time and expensive fines will also be worse since the court assumes you have not yet learned your lesson.
