Retired State Police Sergeant Arrested for DUI
Siobahn Sullivan, a retired Delaware State Police Sergeant was arrested for driving under the influence last week. The 45 year-old Sullivan had also been the commander of the executive protection unit charged with protecting former governor Ruth Ann Minner and is the current director of Delaware's Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Enforcement. As chief of this state agency, Sullivan was responsible for enforcing all of Delaware's alcohol and tobacco laws, making this arrest particularly embarrassing for Sullivan. Sullivan was spotted by a local police officer while speeding on a highway in Delaware. Upon questioning her, the local law enforcement agent found that Sullivan was driving under the influence of alcohol. Sullivan has submitted a letter of resignation to the Lewis Schiliro, the secretary of Safety and Homeland Security and was placed on administrative leave with pay until her arraignment, which is currently scheduled for the 22nd of October.
Nobody gets a free pass when it comes to drinking and driving. Even politicians and those whose job it is to enforce alcohol laws can and do get caught for DUI. Sullivan's case highlights a very important aspect of DUI charges: they affect every area of your life. If you have been charged with DUI, the best decision you can make is to contact an experienced Los Angeles DUI defense attorney. A Los Angeles DUI defense attorney knows that being convicted of driving under the influence can appear on your criminal record, potentially limiting your career choices and chances of getting a new job. Do not let your life be derailed by a single mistake--find an experienced
Los Angeles DUI defense attorney to help you defend yourself.
Sullivan's case also highlights another important aspect of DUI arrests: the lawful or unlawful police stop, which often provides a strong defense against Los Angeles DUI charges. In Los Angeles, as in the state of Delaware, police must have a reason to pull you over and make a DUI arrest. In Sullivan's case, police observed her speeding, which in itself can be a punishable offence. Laws in this country prevent citizens from being hassled by law enforcement agents for no reason. If a police officer suspects that you may be driving drunk, he or she must first observe you driving erratically or dangerously before they have an actual reason to pull you over and evaluate your sobriety. If your driving was safe and compliant with local laws and a police officer still stopped you and cited you for DUI, an experienced Los Angeles DUI defense attorney may be able to argue that he or she made an unlawful police stop and have your DUI charges dismissed altogether.
