New Haven Policeman Suspended for DUI
Nobody gets away with driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI)--not even local law enforcement officials. A veteran New Haven, Connecticut police officer was recently put on a six-month suspension from the police force because of DUI. James Evarts, who had worked with the New Haven police force for 11 years, had called in sick to work one day and then, several hours later, was pulled over on suspicion of DUI. Evarts was also carrying his service weapon at the time. A formal meeting of the police commission was called during which New Haven newest Chief of Police Frank Limon had initially sought Evarts' complete removal from the police force. Many of Evarts' fellow law enforcement officials, however, feel that Evarts was unfairly singled out for punishment and strongly felt that his actions warranted a simple disciplinary action from Limon, not a meeting with the police commission. It was the commission that decided to suspend Evarts for six months instead of firing him. Evarts' attorney announced immediately after the meeting that he intended to file a grievance and an appeal since he believed Evarts had been punished without cause.
