DUI Field Sobriety Tests
For decades, Los Angeles Police and California Highway Patrol have used specific voluntary tests to determine possible drunk drivers. Tests can vary, from putting your arms out to your sides and trying to touch your nose, to performing the alphabet backwards to standing on one leg. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) researched these DUI Field Sobriety Tests in 1977 and 1981 and provided a sound array of tests that could allegedly be fairly reliable in determining a driver's intoxication level.
Recently, former Sopranos actor Joseph Gannascoli found out how difficult it can be to be subjected to a DUI Field Sobriety Test. Gannascoli, who played Vito Spatafore on "The Sopranos" was arrested for drunk driving on Friday morning in Florida. He was making an illegal turn and drifting between lanes. When police pulled him over, they smelled alcohol on his breath and noticed his bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. When he took a DUI Field Sobriety Test, he allegedly blew a .111, which is above the legal limit of .08. He was released after posting a $500 bond.
